Blazers – a versatile classic

There are only a handful garments that have been part of the fashion industry right from the start and have never gone out of fashion. Women’s blazers are just as much a wardrobe basic as well-fitting blue jeans or simple stiletto pumps.

Originally only used as a uniform in the navy, for competitive rowing in Britain or at boarding or private schools, women’s blazers conquered the fashion world and is now an absolute must-have for formal events. Today, the variety of women’s blazers caters to any taste or style. They come in a variety of shapes:

  • Short blazers
  • Long blazers
  • Oversized blazers
  • Blazer coats
  • Military blazers
  • Denim blazers
  • Sweat blazers

In contrast to the male version – known as smart-casual jackets or sports jackets – classic women’s blazers are fitted at the waist. With a lapel collar, two buttons for fastening and two patch pockets, women’s blazers are a classic and a worthwhile investment. Unlike other short-lived fashions, blazers are always a highlight in any wardrobe and a perfect Mix-and-Match item.

What can I wear with a blazer?

Women’s blazers can be worn with virtually anything. Elegant, casual or modern – the smart jacket always creates a professional appearance. We know blazers from the classic combination with a trouser suit or suit. However, women’s blazers don’t just give an air of competence in business: In a non-formal environment, a blazer will look just as trendy and gorgeous as well.

A casual look is all about the cut of the blazers: Long blazers or oversized blazers, cinched at the waist with a narrow belt – they always look fashionable and feminine.

The 5 most attractive blazer outfits

Where should I wear which type of blazer, and how can I add more style to the look? Have a look at these five outfit variations:

  • Outfit 1: Chic at an office meeting

An important meeting is coming up at work and you aren’t sure what to wear? No doubt: a women’s blazer is the right choice for this occasion. Depending on the dress code, the jacket can be combined with matching trousers to make a trouser suit, or with a pencil skirt and pumps. Where the dress code is a little more relaxed, try a slim, long blazer with a blouse, straight leg jeans and heels.

  • Outfit 2: Shopping with friends

Who doesn’t love arranging to meet friends for coffee and then having a stroll through town? What you need is a comfortable outfit! A casual oversized women’s blazer offers plenty freedom of movement. Just wear a loose T-shirt or a comfortable hoodie underneath! And with it your favourite pair of jeans and trainers to complete the urban look for a perfect shopping day.

  • Outfit 3: Dinner date

Finally some couple time: so why not show off your best side for a dinner date with that special someone? Skinny jeans show off feminine curves. They can be styled with a casual, comfortable T-shirt. Cinch your long blazer at the waist with a narrow belt for that extra special feminine touch. Don’t forget pumps for an upright posture and the look is complete.

  • Outfit 4: Blazers as a day and night look

A day full of appointments and then dinner and drinks in the evening? What you need is a versatile outfit that is flexible and comfortable during the day and looks chic and sophisticated at night. One unbeatable combination is skinny jeans with a short blazer. Both in dark blue or black and teamed with a white blouse: you will always look your best! When it comes to shoes, its worth packing a pair to change into: Ballerinas or lace-ups during the day, stylishly patent pumps in the evening.

  • Outfit 5: An elegant look for charity and red carpet events

A charity event, a sophisticated private viewing or an invitation to an important event – there are times when a personal stylist would really come in handy! When you need an evening wardrobe with style... Just reach for a blazer!

Worn with a maxi dress or an elegant jumpsuit – a women’s blazer around the shoulders acts like a men’s smart-casual jacket and keeps its wearer cosy and warm all evening. It is a more elegant alternative to a jacket, but not as hot and heavy as a coat.

Blazers need care too

Women’s blazers are often made from very delicate fabrics that couldn’t exactly be described as easy-care. To check the washability of the various material blends, its worth having a glance at the care label first. A “P” in a circle means that professional dry cleaning or chemical cleaning is recommended. The following fabrics can be carefully hand-washed at home.

  • Cotton
  • Jersey
  • Polyester
  • Viscose
  • Denim
  • Wool
  • Silk

Simply follow these six steps:

  • Soak the textiles in lukewarm water with a little mild soap.
  • Gently rub stains or worn areas with your fingertips. Caution: Please do not use a brush, because it could roughen the fine fibres of the blazer.
  • Rinse with cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Place the jacket on a dry towel and roll it up with the towel. The towel absorbs excess water. Never, ever wring out the blazer.
  • Just hang it up in the fresh air and allow it to dry completely.
  • Depending on the look you want to achieve, you can also iron most women's blazers. Be careful with the heat settings, because some fabrics could suffer from a too hot iron. A steam iron or steamer is the perfect choice for blazers.

Professional cleaning is the way to go for materials like virgin wool, leather or lyocell . That way, you will enjoy your new best friend for a long time to come.
